Context
Demonstrating spinal surgery at a conference is impossible: you cannot bring clients into an operating room. Videos fail to convey the precision and ergonomics of the instruments. The client wanted surgeons to test-drive the implants virtually.
My role
I managed development of a high-fidelity VR surgery simulator.
What I did
- A fully immersive environment where the user acts as lead surgeon and performs the implantation following a strict medical protocol with digital replicas of the company’s proprietary tools.
- Digital microscope. To show microsurgery details in a standard headset I introduced a floating detail screen (picture-in-picture) with a magnified, high-contrast live feed of the vertebrae removal and implant insertion.
Result
- Turned passive observers into active users.
- The simulator became the centrepiece of the client’s exhibitions and raised engagement time and sales leads.
