Context
High-fidelity VR simulators usually need expensive, specialised hardware, which makes mass training too costly.
My role
I proposed the concept and led R&D from idea to prototype: I defined the product requirements and supervised the engineers so that the hardware sensors integrated with Unreal Engine.
What I did
- Modular attachment. Instead of buying simulation weapons, digitise the real service weapon with a smart sensor unit that clips onto it.
- Designed the sensor concept, the sniper-scope simulation and the ballistic module.
- Value hypothesis: soldiers train with their own assigned rifles, with fully realistic ergonomics and no custom weapon hardware.
Result
- The concept was technically validated: trigger logic and tracking were precise.
- Finding: standard VR headsets physically obstruct the rifle stock. The setup suits close-quarters drills where the weapon is held loosely, but is not yet suitable for precision sniper training until headsets get smaller.
- A deliberate “validated, with a clear boundary” outcome — the kind of conclusion a prototype is for.
